Frequently asked questions
Is Kanjii free?
Yes. Kanjii is free to use, with no ads, no subscription and no paid tier. It is also open source.
Does Kanjii have a fixed kanji learning order?
No. Kanjii has no curriculum and no locked levels. You choose which kanji and which words you want to learn, in whatever order your own studying happens to take you.
Can I track kanji I already know?
Yes, and that is the intended way to start. A short first-run setup shows you kanji in frequency order and you tap the ones you can already read. You can change any tag later.
Can I use Kanjii alongside my textbook or class?
That is what it is for. Kanjii does not replace a course, a textbook or a teacher. It is the layer that records what you have met and schedules the review, so your existing routine stays exactly as it is.
Does Kanjii use spaced repetition?
Yes. Vocabulary is reviewed with a Leitner spaced repetition system in both directions, English→Japanese and Japanese→English. Handwriting is scheduled separately, so a kanji you can read but not write keeps coming back.
Can I import Anki decks into Kanjii?
Yes. Kanjii imports Anki .apkg files and text exports as
decks with their own review schedule. Re-importing the same deck under the
same name updates the cards and keeps your progress.
Can Kanjii extract vocabulary from Japanese text?
Yes. Paste any Japanese text and Kanjii lists the words in it, each shown against your own kanji tags, ready to add to your word list.
Do I need an account to use Kanjii?
No. There are no accounts and no sign-up. Everything is stored in your own browser — see Privacy for the details.
Does Kanjii work offline?
Yes. Kanjii is an installable web app and works fully offline once it has loaded, including stroke data for the kanji you are studying.
How is Kanjii different from WaniKani or Duolingo?
Those apps decide the order and the pace for you. Kanjii has no order of its own: you tag what you know, add the words you meet, and it handles the tracking and scheduling around whatever you are already doing. There are no streaks and no points either — levels here are scheduling, not score.
