Kanjii features

Kanjii is a free, open-source Japanese kanji and vocabulary tracker. It doesn't teach you a syllabus — it keeps track of the one you already follow.

Kanji tracking

Tag each of the 2,136 jōyō kanji as new, learning, known or mastered. Those tags are the centre of the app: practice, writing drills and the reader all read from them, so the app always works on what you personally still need. Your tags are yours — nothing in Kanjii ever changes one behind your back.

Kanji writing practice

Write kanji by hand on screen and get each stroke checked as you draw it, or switch to paper mode and grade yourself. Handwriting is scheduled separately from vocabulary, so a kanji you can read but not write comes back until you can.

Your own vocabulary

Kanjii ships with no word list on purpose. You add the words you actually meet — in a textbook, a show, a conversation — with readings, meanings and a note. Each word links to the kanji inside it, so you can see at a glance which part of a word is the bit you don't know yet.

Spaced repetition

Reviews are scheduled with a Leitner system, in both directions: English→Japanese for production and Japanese→English for recognition. New words are mixed into reviews at a pace you set, so a large import can't bury the words already waiting.

Vocabulary from Japanese text

Paste any Japanese text and Kanjii pulls the words out of it, each one shown against your own kanji tags. It's the fastest way to turn something you were reading anyway into study material, and it tells you which words are hard for you rather than in general.

Anki import

Already have decks? Import an Anki .apkg — or a text export — and study it inside Kanjii as its own deck, with its own review schedule. Re-importing the same deck under the same name updates the cards and keeps your progress.

Printable worksheets

Generate genkō-yōshi practice sheets for any selection of kanji, with optional tracing guides, and print them.

Progress you can actually see

Charts for kanji status, coverage by frequency band, review queue, writing skill and vocabulary growth over time — so you can tell whether the thing you're doing is working.

Local-first, free, open source

Everything is stored in your browser. No account, no ads, no subscription, and it works fully offline once installed. Backup and restore are yours to trigger, to a file or to your own Google Drive. The source is on GitHub.
